I'm glad no one died trying to find her.

It's too late for Sharon Tate.

It's hard to understand what she was thinking. I love the mountains in winter and adverse / extreme weather, but this was NO surprise. The Observatory posted several very clear and explicit weather reports specifically addressing the grave nature of the weather and the fact that a rescue would not happen, especially from the summit. Monday on Mt. Washington was colder than almost anywhere on the entire planet, second only to the South Pole.

I would be interested to understand her motivation for heading up in those conditions. Was she trying to prove a point or was it simply stupidity? (I think I know the answer)

Ridiculous! Her husband is an idiot for dropping her off for the hike also.

At the observatory:

Sunday - Average wind speed of 55.9mph with a max of 105mph
Monday - Average wind speed of 91.2mph with a max of 141mph

Both days a low of -35 F

Those numbers equate to windchill values approaching -100 F

Aside from the obvious poor decisions, I'm wondering if there were any contributing factors (like equipment failure or fall) that contributed to her death. At least in theory the conditions are survivable with a bivy sack, snow cave, proper sleeping bag etc. It would be interesting to know what was in her pack. Are there any lessons to be learned?

Friend of mine's daughter (who had also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro) wanted to climb Mount Everest. Told her to go climb Mount Washington in the winter in worse than average to bad conditions, then get back to me. Not related to this incident.

She made an irresponsible decision that cost her life and luckily no one else's. It's one thing to be caught in weather that pops up, but to willingly trek out into the white mountains in those conditions is just plain irresponsible.

You do need to go out in bad weather to gain experience (and maybe she was training for Everest), but there is a limit. As a sailor, I've left the dock many times with small craft advisories (on a well equipped boat with enough experienced crew), but not when the forecast is for a hurricane.

I totally agree she made a poor decision, what I'm curious about (and haven't been able to find any info on) is what her state of preparation was, and where did she fail (there may be lessons to learn here, much like analyzing the aftermath of a fatal avalanche).
