Whether they have been elitist or not, they have slowly grown to project the image at the presidential level. Clearly, Truman was not an elitist, nor was LBJ, Carter or even Clinton, at least in his public persona. Adlei Stevenson certainly came across as an elitist to many but others? Not so sure. The party, on the other hand, has slowly moved to be a coastal and urban party, failing to communicate with the working class in a meaningful manner. Their leadership and communication are just out of touch with the middle of America right now.

LBJ elitist? Carter elitist?
It's more about what the party stands for and how they approach politics than the perceptions about individual politicians. Democrats tend to lean on intellectual and rational ideas, something FDR started with his brain trust. It can be a useful tool for crafting policy but reasonable policy is rarely something voters get out of bed for.

On the other hand. If you make them feel something, like fear or anger or hope, they'll follow you anywhere. Take a look at the GOP platform today - almost all emotion over substance - fear the illegal immigrant, get angry at inflation, tax cuts for everybody, etc. For a recent Democrat look at Obama - that guy ran on hope, not reasonable policy.
